Sometimes my mom says the most inane things. She can babble on and on about OJ Simpson's innocence or the deadly dangers of driving in the rain. And her lectures! Exercise, eat right, yadda, yadda, yadda. But sometimes she comes up with a nugget that I think even surprises her. A couple of months ago, my Dad, Mom and I were playing a couple of hands of poker. I kept losing. The next weekend Bonnie and Clyde pocketed another 15 bucks from their already destitute daughter. The third weekend my mom looked at me and said, y'know Robin, you've got the same problem at poker that you've got at life. Honey, you've got to learn to play the cards you're dealt. Ba-dum-bum.
The lady makes sense. You can keep betting that the Ace will come in, but it probably won't. Better to make the most of the two pair, even if it means folding.
Oh yeah, the next week I won. Sure, I'm still a 40-year-old spending my weekends playing cards with my parents but I think I'm learning something. Now if I can just start exercising and eating right.

1. What was your first Halloween costume?
Probably a hobo. I think when I was a kid, I was always a hobo. What ever happened to the hobos? Are they still around? Hobbling around train tracks with their kerchiefs and stubble? Or do they only exist in old movies and Halloween parties?
2. What was your best costume and why?
A few years ago, I went as my biological clock going off. And last year I had a baby. Need I say more?
3. Did you ever play a trick on someone who didn't give you a treat?
Never was much of a trickster as a kid, but once, and I don't know why, I put a tack on Jordan Beck's chair. And he sat on it. I felt terrible. Never did pull another one after that. Still feel bad.
4. Do you have any Halloween traditions? (ie: Family pumpkin carving, special dinner before trick or treating, etc.)
Eat candy. Throw up. Repeat.
5. Share your favorite scary story...real or legend!
Too scary for this space. Whoo hoo!!

I've just started this weblogging thing and like a lot of neophytes I'm way into my visitor stats. I'm always curious if anyone has been to my site. It feels the same as it did when I first started surfing the Web - around 1991. I plugged in my 14.4 and accessed some text network. That's all there was of course, just text networks pretty much. And AOL 1.0, which had about four lobbies. Do they still have lobbies? Anyway, when you first connected, and you knew that you could connect with strangers, it had this very sort of voyeuristic and exciting and geeky and modern feel to it. I mean I was the type of kid who used to dial long distance numbers in the middle of the night just to see who would wake up. So I was into it. That's kind of how it feels knowing that people are watching. So, fair warning: I can see you.
David Blaine. Jeesh. I get it, you don't eat and now you feel spiritual. Hello! People have been fasting for years and feeling spiritual. It's called meditation, not show biz. It's called inner peace, not I need a piece. Boring.
Today was some work and some play. Tomorrow is all work and no play makes Robin a dull girl. Good thing my sparkling personality mitigates any temporary damage.
