What's the Significance?

Tonight is the premiere of a new show on Bravo, "Significant Others." I'm going to watch it. It looks like a good show, but I have personal reasons for tuning in. My sister-in-law has been working on this show as a production assistant for the past several months. This opportunity came at a good time for her because after Ross died, she moved to Los Angeles with no job and no idea of what to do with her time. Working on the show afforded her at least a little a tiny bit of daytime distraction. The irony is, of course, that the show focuses on marital dischord, and she and Ross were in one of the happiest marriages around. Want more irony? The premiere, today, would have been their eighth wedding anniversary.

Reality Bites

I have to come clean ... I am willingly participating in the rapid disintegration of class and decorum in the world. I have been watching My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiance on Fox. I claim that I don't watch non-MTV or non-Trump reality shows, but somehow the remote found its way over to this program and now, of course, I'm hooked. It's true train-wreck TV. The criticisms are too obvious, so I'll just tout its, er, appeal. This suburban blondie is willing to put her fairly tolerant, but uptight family through an emotional meat grinder for a million dollars. Once you tune in, it's impossible to turn away.

Flash in the Pan

I didn't watch the Super Bowl tonight, but I guess Janet Jackson took the world's attention off her brother for a minute with an inadvertent flash of her breast to zillions of drunken sports fans. But what really gets me, is that she is forced to apologize for it. I'm sure she's totally embarassed, but every article I've read on "the incident" is all about how sorry she and her cohort, Justin Timberlake, were for the unplanned indecency. So what? Gee whiz! I think CBS and MTV should be sending her a fruit basket and a certificate for a spa day right about now, not asking for her apologies. Corporate America. Yeesh.

The Gig is Up

I'm happy to report that I can safely cross the People's Choice Awards off my must-see television programs. Whatta snooze! I'm a big fan of awards shows but this one blew. It was a b-lister's paradise, very sad. It was supposed to be a 30th anniversary kind of gala, but instead it was more like a telethon with little interstitials that sounded like begging from former winners. They'd have Mary Tyler Moore saying something like, "I won five of 'em. Please don't let 'em end. The people's choice awards are great. They're awesome. I have some." At one point one of these celebrities even put seemed to plea for the show's master of ceremonies Army Archerd job, who I'm sorry to say could barely read his copy off the teleprompter. And they pulled a weathered Mac "Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me" Davis out of some spider hole and made him say that he had been reduced to a trivia question.

Oh yeah, Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer hosted. Not pretty.

Dirty Little Secrets

I'll admit it. There are some things of which I'm ashamed. Namely shitty television. Primarily Seventh Heaven. I don't know why I like that show. First, there's the terrible acting. It's even gotten to the point where the formerly employable go to watch their careers wither and die. But I like it for some reason.

It bugs me when it comes up in casual conversation. I'm not the kind of girl who likes to lie. But Seventh Heaven? Why must I be drawn to such tiresome fluff. Proselytizing, squeaky clean boring tribble. It's so unlike me. What could it be? Oh yeah, I know. Cuz they're good lookin' Good looking people on the WB. Take me to Stars Hollow, Smallville or the Peach Pit, it doesn't really matter what trivial issue is at stake, cuz if you're good looking and Mia is asleep, chance are I'm going to tune in.

I suppose if I have some work to do, or if the phone rings, or if the toilet needed scrubbing, I'd give up my fix of these shows, especially since I found the nifty little recaps at Television Without Pity, though they are merciless and hilarious.

And so now you know the truth about my dirty little secrets and I must admit. Sharing them has made me feel just that much less dirty.
